Why your air conditioner smells and what to do
Air conditioner smells point to specific problems: mold in the drain pan, a refrigerant leak, overheated wiring, or a gas leak near the air handler. Each odor carries a different level of urgency, and some require a licensed contractor to diagnose safely.
What does my air conditioner smell like?
Smell is a reliable diagnostic.
Each odor points to a different failure mode, and knowing which is which tells you how urgent the problem is. A musty or mildew smell means standing water has pooled in the drain pan or condensation has fed mold on the evaporator coil. That musty smell is mold sitting in the drain pan. A rotten-egg or sulfur odor is harder to ignore and harder to dismiss: a gas line often runs near the air handler, and a leak will pull that smell into the airstream. A burning or electrical smell points to overheated wiring, a motor running too hot, or debris that has landed on a heat element. A sweet or chemical smell, faintly solvent-like, points to refrigerant escaping from the system.
When should a smell mean calling a professional?
Some of the smells covered above sit outside anything a homeowner can safely assess.
Refrigerant loss is one. There is no field test you can run without recovery equipment and the certification to use it. A burning smell coming from the unit requires opening the cabinet and reading what is inside with instruments, not a nose. A sulfur or gas smell near the equipment is a safety situation first, and a diagnostic question second. The limit in each of these cases is real. It is not that the work is complicated or that the process is long. The diagnosis itself requires access, tools, or regulated handling that falls outside what a homeowner can do, which means the smell alone cannot tell you whether the wiring is failing or the refrigerant is gone.
