What a contractor has to settle before quoting a job is not the state's aggregate weather history but the actual load the equipment at that address has been running against. 1,780 severe weather events were recorded in New Hampshire between 2015 and 2024. Spread across a state large enough that conditions shift considerably from one part to another, that count lands differently at different addresses, and the statewide figure cannot tell a contractor how hard a particular system has been asked to run or how much recovery it has had to do between events. A specification drawn from the state total rather than the site will be off, and the correction shows up later in the bill.

A quote that arrives before a contractor has looked at the existing ductwork and electrical service is a guess. Half the homes in New Hampshire were built in 1979 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That share of the stock means most houses a contractor visits will have systems and infrastructure that were sized and installed under standards that have since changed, so the panel, the supply runs, and the return path all get checked rather than assumed. What comes back from that inspection sets the specification, and the price follows from it.

A condenser sitting outside in New Hampshire faces wind, ice, heavy snow loads, and summers that push it hard in the other direction. Equipment sized or positioned without accounting for that full range works against itself from the start. The contractor you are matched with knows how those forces interact with load calculations, clearance requirements, and the service decisions that follow.

New Hampshire HVAC Installation and Repair License Requirements

New Hampshire sets its own licensing rules for HVAC installation and repair work. The provisions below are quoted directly from state sources, not paraphrased.

New Hampshire's mechanical licensing board issues nine credentials — hearth system, four fuel gas endorsements, domestic appliance technician, and master, journeyman and apprentice plumber — and a licensee may not work outside the specialty their licence names. None of the nine is an HVAC licence.

N.H. Rev. Stat. Ann. ch. 153 (New Hampshire General Court)

A state licensing requirement for this trade means that only contractors who meet New Hampshire's standards are authorized to do this work on your home. That matters when you are deciding who to let on the job. Every contractor this site routes a request to holds the license these provisions describe.

New Hampshire does not license HVAC as a trade, and says so where it matters: the plumbing licence expressly does not reach a person installing heating, cooling, air conditioning or domestic water heating systems, whether solar, oil, gas or electric. The gas piping on a gas-fired system is a separate matter and needs a fuel gas fitter licence.
